Our Most Anticipated Movies of 2019

10. Midsommar

Tailing off from Ari Aster‘s resoundingly successful horror film ‘Hereditary’ (2018) Aster aims to tackle yet another horror. Midsommar is described to be about a young couple falling prey to a local Pagan cult. We have firm trust in Aster’s ability to produce another fantastic horror to shake us to the core.

9. Us

Yet another horror graces this list with ‘Us’ — Jordan Peele’s social-horror thriller with themes said to be just as provocative and socially enthralling as ‘Get Out’ (2017). Horrors seem to be a “go-to” genre for serious filmmakers to explore, especially those wanting to make their mark. Peele’s impact on horror cannot be ignored, as his eyes are set to create his own horror subset dedicated to exploring socially relevant messages.

8. The Lion King

This film is heavily banking on nostalgia and our love for The Lion King is too strong to resist this. The Lion King is one of the best Disney films out there, probably the best if we’re being honest. Jon Favreau proved himself with such a heartfelt and stunning retelling of The Jungle Book so we have full confidence he can do the same here alongside such a talented and diverse cast.

7. The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse film still - MovieGainz Most Anticipated 2019

Described as a fantasy horror set in the 1890s and based in a world of old seafaring myths, ‘The Lighthouse’ is directed by Robert Eggers (The Witch, 2015) next dive into horror. Shot purely on 35mm black and white stock, produced by A24, and said to be torturous to film by the cast, The Lighthouse is a high-risk art-piece horror with acclaimed stars Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe helming as the lead cast. This Lovecraftian sounding horror excites us just as much as it intrigues us.

6. Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spider-Man: Far From Home film still - MovieGainz Most Anticipated 2019

This choice came as a real surprise when we were deciding this list as we liked Spider-Man: Homecoming but we didn’t love it. However, this film has many different things going for it such as it is the first MCU phase 4 film which takes place just minutes after Avengers 4. The decision to keep Michael Keaton involved as well as adding Jake Gyllenhaal as the villains of the film is fantastic, Mysterio is an exciting addition. Spider-Man travelling away from New York City is something that sparks our interest as we are keen to see how he adapts to that environment.

5. Joker

Alright, well this one is definitely one of our more riskier films on this list purely based on the Warner Brothers/DC track record over the last 6 years. We can’t help but feel really optimistic about this one based on everything we have seen or heard so far. Joker sounds as if it is going to be far from the DC universe and be focused on doing its own thing. The legend himself, Joaquin Phoenix states that it is unique and doesn’t feel like a studio film as it is a gritty character study and has a budget of only $55 million.

4. Uncut Gems

In 2017, the Safdie Brothers created the masterpiece known as Good Time and they are back to do it all again. The brothers are writing and directing A24’s crime dramedy starring Adam Sandler, Lakeith Stanfield and Pom Klementieff. Adam Sandler has proven himself to be more than a capable actor as long as he is under the right direction and we believe the Safdie Brothers seem like a great fit for his acting style. We got a great performance from Robert Pattinson with the Safdie Brothers and we’re betting the same is going to happen this time around.

3. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

As the ninth film in legendary director Quentin Tarantino‘s repertoire, ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ is a mystery crime film following the Manson family murders. With Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, the cast is massive and the plot controversial. This is a landmark point in his career as his next film will supposedly be his last. We’re savouring these last stories and hope that this film finds a solidified spot in his works.

2. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

The final film in the recent Star Wars trilogy. Whether you’re an avid fan or a skeptic of the modern Star Wars films, we cannot deny that there’s a million questions crossing our mind about which direction JJ Abrams will take this final film. The fact that Star Wars: The Last Jedi ended with the plots seemingly tied – it makes us more fascinated in what may be up their sleeve.

1. Avengers: Endgame

Avengers Endgame film still - MovieGainz Most Anticipated 2019

You guessed it. Avengers: Endgame is our most anticipated for 2019 and how could it not? The Russo Brothers handled Avengers: Infinity War with such mastery and have placed the Avengers in such a brilliant position. It is clearly going to be focused on our original heroes who have been there from the beginning and give them a heartbreaking farewell as we move into the next chapter of the MCU. We are SO ready for this film, it is going to be one hell of a ride.

Film is subjective. Give us your thoughts!
