Due to Covid-19 we have most of 2020’s films being pushed into the already stacked year of 2021. Here are our Top 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2021…
Honorable Mentions:
Next Goal Wins
Taika Waititi returns with a stacked cast and a particularly interesting plot synopsis. The plot is enticing enough without the amount of talent behind this film.
The Russo Brothers have finally broken from the shackles of the MCU. We just couldn’t resist Tom Holland as an ex-soldier experiencing PTSD, with the Russo Brothers at the helm.
The Matrix 4
Years after the closing of this iconic franchise we get a fourth film, there’s so much mystery surrounding this that we couldn’t resist being intrigued.
Edgar Wright returns with a psychological horror in a noir setting. Wright’s strong editing is enough to draw our interest; we could be in for something special here, so long as the story is stronger than the style.
Far From Home was a complete let-down and a bad Spider-Man film. Our excitement for this comes from the curiousness surrounding a potential live-action Spider-Verse.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Introducing a new character to the Marvel Universe, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten rings is one to get excited about.
Gucci
Ridley Scott returns, but this time with an unexpected film – with Lady Gaga at the helm and what could potentially be a film with excess style and some fascinating narrative heft. Gucci’s cast and director sounds as lavish as the brand itself.
Simply put, after Cats, we are aching for a great musical. Steven Spielberg has the ability to recreate a timeless classic.
Two behemoths going toe to toe, this will sure to be a fun action blockbuster.
Maestro
Bradley Cooper’s second film in the director’s chair looks to be a good one as he tells the story of a couple over a 30 year time period.
10. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning

If you have seen Mission Impossible: Fallout then there is not much else to see as to why we are excited for this film. After the success of that film, Universal immediately greenlit Mission Impossible 7 and 8, to be filmed back-to-back with Christopher McQuarrie at the helm. We have full confidence that McQuarrie can deliver another high-intensity action thriller while incorporating practical effects and complex stunt work.
9. Luca

It would be a crime if we did not include a Pixar film in our Top Ten Most Anticipated. Pixar has the strongest track record in relation to quality than perhaps any long-running franchise. ‘Luca’ provides plenty of reasons to be excited – it is an original Italian story, Pixar films usually tend to be much better when it is original (excluding the Toy Story franchise). There is no reason to doubt any of the crew working on this film – especially when they work for Pixar.

Thanks to Covid-19, No Time to Die has been delayed a whole year but, come April 2021 we will finally get to witness Daniel Craig’s final outing as the 007 agent. We can’t wait to see what director Cary Joji Fukunaga has installed for us in the 25th film of the James Bond franchise.

Delayed and seemingly forgotten, we most certainly haven’t kept quiet about our excitement for this follow-up film! ‘A Quiet Place’ blew us away with its unique setting and mysterious narrative – in many ways we’re excited to discover the mysteries behind it all, in other ways we worry that showing too much may deteriorate the mystery of it all – either way, we want and need this movie in our lives – too many films have been put to sleep this year!

Yes, we know the 2016 Suicide Squad movie exists and yes, we know it is horrendous. However, these two films have nothing in common besides the cast member or two. Warner Bros/DC have become smarter and have learned from their mistakes. They made the genius move of bringing James Gunn onboard to this film, gave him complete creative control and allowed him to bring to life characters that really work with his sense of humour, likewise to the Guardians of the Galaxy films. We are beyond excited for James Gunn’s redemption film
5. Reminiscence

From acclaimed writer and co-creator of HBO’s TV series ‘WestWorld’ Lisa Joy now has grown a reputation as one of the few future thinkers within the movie industry – alongside visionaries like Alex Garland and Joy’s husband Jonathan Nolan. A relatively high concept sci-fi developed by Warner Bro’s, starring Hugh Jackman and by the co-creator of WestWorld? Count us in!
4. Babylon

Damien Chazelle’s next film is an interesting one where the plot details are very thin but all we know is that it will be about the transition from silent movies to talkies during the golden age of Hollywood. With a stellar cast of Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Michael B Jordan, Tobey Maguire and possibly Margot Robbie, ‘Babylon’ is one we are very excited for in 2021.

Wes Anderson returns to live-action following his last one – The Grand Budapest Hotel. This is more than enough to get us amped for this film as that film was extremely high quality in all facets of filmmaking. Judging by the trailer, this looks to be no different as the ‘Wes Anderson’ style seems to be in full force. Pair this with an extremely saturated cast – it is highly unlikely to disappoint and we couldn’t be more excited for more Wes Anderson.
2. Dune

How could we not include this? With its near 1 year delay and now the possibility of its destiny on streaming, it’s a sad day to be a Dune fan – but that doesn’t mean we don’t have full faith in Denis Villeneuve and the quality he can produce. This year has been hard enough already, we need some Dune in our veins!

Here it is, our most anticipated film of 2021. This is a film about two astronauts who try to warn mankind about an incoming asteroid. Now this may just seem like a typical disaster movie and it very well could be, but the thing that gets us excited about ‘Don’t Look Up’ is its cast. With a host of Academy Award winners and nominees such as Leonard Di Caprio, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence and so much more this is a movie that can not only be a fun blockbuster but also an award dark horse contender.
