MovieGainz Most Anticipated Films of 2022

After two years of constant delays due to the pandemic, there is some stability back in the entertainment once again – although, there are still hurdles to conquer. All of us movie buffs have been deprived of consistent stream of certified blockbusters. Well, the movie gods have listened to our prayers and we have been blessed with an absolutely STACKED release slate for 2022. Here are our most anticipated films of 2022.

Firstly, lets go through our honourable mentions (Films that just missed out on our top ten):

Now, lets dive into our top ten most anticipated films for the upcoming year:

10. The Son

Most anticipated 2022

Florian Zeller returns following his feature-length directorial debut, The Father, which was a complete masterwork. The Son is based on the play that Zeller wrote titled Le Fils, which was received with high critical acclaim as it was noted as a masterpiece. Featuring an all-star cast with Anthony Hopkins, Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, and Vanessa Kirby. We have little doubt that Zeller will artfully adapt his play into something that will heavily tug on the heartstrings.

9. Mission Impossible 7

Most anticipated 2022

The Mission Impossible franchise is one that seems to get better with each film. Christopher McQuarrie has fine-tuned this franchise where it earns its ranks as one of the best in the action-driven genre. Bringing together compelling character writing amongst authentic and practical filmmaking, creates an extremely immersive experience. We will likely be treated to extreme adrenaline-inducing stunt work and a captivating progression of Ethan Hunt’s story.

8. Bardo (or False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths)

Bardo

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s next dive into cinema comes a full 7 years later after his success with The Revenant (2015); another film that seemingly looks to follow in similar footsteps to his character film Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) and potentially taking inspiration from the likes of Roma (2018). All we know is that the setting is Mexico and it explores social modernity. Either way, we’re excited.

7. John Wick: Chapter 4

John Wick 4

Originally supposed to release in May 2021 alongside The Matrix: Resurrections as part of ‘Keanu Reeves Day’, we saw John WIck: Chapter 4 become another victim to Covid-19. Following on from the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, we will see John Wick having to deal with being betrayed by The Continentals manager as we see John teaming up with the Bowery King as they plan a war against the high table.

6. Babylon

Babylon

Directed by Damien Chazelle as he brings us into the Golden age of Hollywood as we witness the industry’s switch from silent film to talkies. Starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie in leading roles and a stunning supporting cast in Tobey Maguire, Olivia Wilde and Samara Weaving, Babylon will surely be a film to keep an eye on come Oscar season in 2023.

5. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Across the spiderverse

The 2018 film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was one of the biggest surprises of the year. Expanding upon its creative team, the sequel has new directors at the helm with Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson. Kemp Powers was a co-director of Pixar’s Soul and had a huge role in shaping that film and Joaquim Dos Santos directed a large portion, including the final episodes, of the highly acclaimed Avatar: The Last Airbender. Phil Lord stays on as the writer with his long-time creative collaborator, Christopher Miller, joining the writing team. Combine this heavy amount of talent with the creative and striking animation that the first film employed and you have a bona-fide triumph of a film.

4. The Northman

Most anticipated film 2022

Acclaimed director Robert Egger’s returns with a pile of cash (some $70 million) and an even more impressive cast to fill out his Nordic epic tale – The Northman looks to be a brutal and fantastical tale not unlike his other work. Interesting film-makers are just as important as large scale blockbusters.

3. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Most anticipated 2022

Despite reshoots, we are still excited to see what Sam Raimi has in store for us with Doctor Strange. Whether it’s the idea of even experiencing the slightest bit of horror in a Marvel flick or just the influence of Sam Raimi, we are legitimately intrigued to see how it all goes down.

2. Avatar 2

Avatar 2

Yes! That’s right! Avatar 2! Granted, there are extremely valid reasons to not be overly amped for this. Avatar (2009) was groundbreaking in its 3-D technology and computer-generated imagery via motion capture but features a story that we feel like we have seen before. Avatar 2 has a chance to build upon its narrative, characters and its rich universe that has been setup. The part where we become excited for this film is the scope of the filmmaking as 13 years will have passed and James Cameron will once again push the filmmaking technology to its limit. To show how intense the filmmaking is behind-the-scenes – Kate Winslet broke Tom Cruise’s filming underwater sequence with 7 minutes and 14 seconds.

1. The Batman

Most anticipated film 2022 - The Batman

Could it be anything else really? The hotly anticipated Batman reboot will be gracing our screens in March 2022 which is directed by Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson portraying The Caped Crusader. Set to be in his second year as Batman as he deals with corruption which is slowly taking over throughout Gotham while facing the looming threat of  The Riddler (Paul Dano). Judging by the reactions of the early test screenings and the trailers, we are in for a Batman film that we have never seen before. Seemingly heading into a detective style adaptation of Batman we are sure to be in for a treat when The Batman graces our screens.
