Physical Media – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 4K Review

Sony Pictures invites fans to dive into the mesmerizing world of the Spider-Verse with an exceptional 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray physical media release that truly shines. Boasting a stunning 2160p HDR10 transfer and an incredibly immersive Atmos audio track, this collection is a must-have for any enthusiast. While it may lack Dolby Vision support, the HDR10 transfer packs a punch where it matters most. The standard Blu-ray edition is certainly impressive, but the 4K UHD version takes things to a whole new level of refinement, elevating every aspect of the viewing experience.

The level of detail and the film’s unique focus effect are noticeably enhanced in this 4K UHD presentation. Fine lines in character animation and important background objects appear sharper and more defined. The focus effect, which plays a significant role in visual storytelling, is executed seamlessly, allowing the vibrant 4-color “dot” color pattern to emerge with remarkable clarity.

The HDR10 color grading truly brings the primaries, black levels, and crisp whites to life. One standout sequence involves the introduction of the various Spider-Men, including Spider-Noir with his distinct black and white photo-negative appearance. The rich inky blacks and bold, crisp whites in this scene are truly remarkable, devoid of any blooming. The larger-than-life character design of Wilson Fisk also benefits greatly from the exceptional black levels. As the film’s psychedelic multi-verse visuals unfold during the climax, the added resolution and wide color gamut handle the demanding workload flawlessly.

Although the Dolby Vision HDR stream offers more intricate refinement in terms of colors, blacks, and whites, the difference compared to HDR10 is not as dramatic as in some other titles. Nonetheless, the HDR10 presentation on this disc is still awe-inspiring, showcasing the film’s visuals in all their glory.

As for the audio experience, the Dolby Atmos mix is an absolute treat. In fact, it’s difficult to add anything beyond what was previously mentioned in our streaming review—simply put, playing it loud is the best way to enjoy this fantastic audio mix. It’s a testament to the film’s immersive sound design that it can even make your neighbors want to join in the fun when they hear it through the walls!

The 4K UHD disc delivers an extra punch in the low-frequency effects department. Impactful action scenes, like the fight at Aunt May’s house and the inter-dimensional climax, resonate even more powerfully on the disc. However, the core elements of dialogue, scoring, and surround effects remain impressive across both versions. While the streaming mix is undoubtedly remarkable, the disc edges it out slightly in terms of sonic impact.

Sound Review: 5/5

Not only is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse one of the best-animated films to have ever won an Oscar, but it also stands as one of the greatest comic book adaptations ever made—a true cinematic gem. Thankfully, this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release lives up to the film’s outstanding reputation. With its vibrant and visually stunning 2160p transfer, HDR10 support, thunderous Dolby Atmos mix, and a wealth of informative bonus features, there’s little to complain about except the anticipation for the sequel.
