The Little Mermaid - Movie Review
The Little Mermaid - 4K UHD

Rob Marshall’s take on Disney’s beloved classic, “The Little Mermaid,” surfaces in stunning 4K UHD, bringing a visual spectacle that is both enchanting and divisive. While the all-new cast, featuring Halle Bailey, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy, delivers commendable performances, the film’s prolonged runtime, adding nearly an hour to the original, may test the patience of some viewers. A contentious addition to the soundtrack in the form of a questionable new song further compounds the film’s challenges.

“The Little Mermaid” in HDR10 is nothing short of breathtaking. The undersea kingdom bursts forth with vibrant primaries that leap off the screen, creating a bright and bold world. Fine details in facial features and practical effects costuming add a layer of beauty to the characters, while the surface world, with its minimal CGI, exudes realism, showcasing intricate details and clothing textures. However, underwater sequences lack gravity, an issue that could have been mitigated with 3D technology, given the abundance of moving objects and creatures.

HDR10 treatment is aptly applied, ensuring the vivid colors receive the attention they deserve, particularly in well-lit underwater scenes and Ariel’s treasure trove. Ursula’s underwater lair stands out by using purples, oranges, and light greens, preserving spatial depth without compromising accent details. Overall, this transfer is a visual delight, though the absence of a 3D option leaves some viewers yearning for a more immersive experience.

Visuals Review: 4/5

On the auditory front, Disney serves up a respectable Atmos mix that, while not groundbreaking, surpasses past Disney Atmos tracks. Scenes of action and excitement, like Ariel’s underwater explorations or the climactic ship explosion, showcase the mix’s prowess, immersing the audience in the chaos. However, quieter moments or single-character scenes lack the same immersive soundscape, reflecting a more moderate approach. The music cues and Ariel’s captivating melodies reverberate effectively through the surround channels and heights but are occasionally interrupted by a polarizing hip-hop-infused song that disrupts the audio experience.

Audio Review: 4/5

“The Little Mermaid” as a live-action adaptation leaves room for varied opinions. It may not be an outright disappointment, but its excessive length and occasional missteps make one appreciate the simplicity of the animated classic. The divisive new song, in particular, stands out as a low point. However, for its target audience, especially the younger generation, the film has found its admirers, as witnessed by the enthusiasm of young viewers. On 4K UHD Blu-ray, the film receives a commendable treatment, with a striking HDR10 transfer and an engaging Atmos track. Bonus features, though not extensive, offer insights into the film’s production, making this release a worthwhile addition to Disney enthusiasts’ collections.

8/10
