Weekend Box Office Results for April 28 – 30, 2023
Please find the Top 10 Weekend Box Office Results below.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Enjoying its final weekend in the number 1 position, The Super Mario Bros. Movie joins elite company for fourth weekend records while recording the highest fourth weekend for any animated film. Dropping only 33% in its fourth weekend and obtaining the 6th highest fourth weekend of all-time behind:
- Avatar – $50.3M
- Avatar: The Way of Water – $45.8M
- Top Gun: Maverick – $44.6M
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $42.3M
- Black Panther – $40.8M
Technically, American Sniper has the highest at $89.2M but the first three weeks it was in limited release so it’s excluded from this. Actuals may actually have The Super Mario Bros. Movie beating Black Panther’s fourth weekend. It’s particularly interesting that three of the top six fourth weekends are in a post-pandemic era – perhaps that is a discussion for another time. Mario Bros are now on the verge of surpassing the $500M milestone at the Domestic Box Office and should be able to join the $600M club – a very prestigious club. Additionally, it has surpassed the billion dollar mark and currently stands as the 11th highest grossing animated film worldwide. Tracking towards $1.2B+ it should have the staying power to jump into the top 5 animated films of all-time.
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (40th Anniversary Re-Release)

The legendary pop-culture icon of Star Wars returned to its big screens with Return of the Jedi. Cracking into the top 5 while being in only 475 theatres is rather impressive and shows that the passion for that franchise is far from dead. Earning a $9,882 per theatre average for $4.69M is extremely high for a 40 year old film and in fact, earns the highest per theatre average for films in the top ten.
