Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3

Weekend Box Office Forecast - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3

As per usual, Marvel Studios opens up the summer movie season and usually featuring one of their most attractive properties. James Gunn successfully turned a bunch of C-list comic-book characters into a bona fide blockbuster franchise. This is currently a lot of discourse surrounding the topics of MCU reputation, superhero fatigue, etc. All eyes are currently looking at how Vol.3 will be performing at the box office…

Final tracking figures and pre-sales rates are indicating a weekend that is significantly down upon its predecessor – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, which opened to $146.5M. As far as MCU film trilogies go, this would mark the first time the final film of the trilogy opens below its predecessor from a domestic and worldwide box office standpoint.

If projections and tracking models are to be believed and realized by the weekends end, then it would add more weight regarding the damage done to the Marvel Cinematic Universe brand. Albeit, it is important to keep things in perspective – it still remains the most lucrative franchise in the film industry. It isn’t all doom and gloom for Vol.3, reviews for the film currently stand at 80% from 161 reviews and if the audience reacts similarly or better, then it could have good staying power throughout May.

From an international perspective, the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has never been particularly strong in the overseas markets. The reason as to why is another conversation but the international total for Vol.2 accounted for 54.9% of its total gross. Vol.2 also did not experience a massive jump in international gross so there may be a ceiling for this franchise in overseas markets.

Do keep in mind that there are real-world implications to some major markets such as China or Russia. When the numbers roll in, it is important to keep those factors in perspective upon analysis.
