In our weekend box office forecast, we note that April shows no sign of slowing down at the box office even with a weakened release slate as The Super Mario Bros. Movie looks to continue its stunning performance for a massive second weekend.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
It looks like word of mouth is carrying The Super Mario Bros. Movie to very impressive heights – already becoming one of the most surprising box office debuts in the past decade. If projections remain correct, then the film will drop a very mild 40-45% for over $80M for a second weekend, placing it in the top 12 second weekends of all time. Grossing an estimated $22.6M on Friday, the path is clear for a mighty second stint at the box office and assuming it carries this momentum through to March – it could challenge as the highest grossing animated film of all-time.
Renfield

Not glowing with exception reviews and mixed word of mouth, Renfield looks to open lower than what projections have suggested. Acquiring a B- CinemaScore, it doesn’t look like the Nicholas Cage vampire flick will draw any blood from its box office opponents.
