Fast X
- Weekend Opening: $67.5M
- Global Opening: $318.8M
We expected the continued downward trend of the Fast X franchise coming with its opening weekend. We’ll see how its long-term potential is with the final domestic and global gross. However, it is curious to see how hard this franchise can fall in the domestic market. This is a little bit concerning considering it is the lowest opening in the franchise since The Fast and the Franchise: Tokyo Drift in 2006. Unless you want to include the spin-off Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw.
It has tough competition week on week as we move forward towards June and beyond, so its long-term outlook looks bleak at best. The Fast and Furious franchise has always been frontloaded since it returned to relevancy following Fast Five. Fast X may have a chance to have more of leggy run due to it being the predecessor to the franchise finale – this may pull in dormant fans.
It may be the third biggest debut for the franchise but I still have concerns considering the inflated $340M budget and upcoming competition. Word of mouth is strong in China so it may be able to capitalize on that momentum and get a total figure north of $200M – dreaming big with this though. The ‘B+’ CinemaScore is among the worst score for the entire franchise so its box office longevity is very limited in the domestic market. Best case scenario for this film is $800M+, either way, the studio is likely to lose money with this one.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3
Another strong hold this weekend despite the competition from Fast X, dropping only 48.4% to $31.98M in its third weekend for a domestic total of $266.5M. It is catching up to Vol.2 slowly due to strong daily holds throughout the week; however, the film feels too far out to catchup.
On the global side – it currently has $659.1M globally after having an international total of $392.6M. It still has a steep hill to climb if it is going to topple the global total of Vol.2 which is $869M. Even still, the $770.8M total for the first film is still not a guarantee to be surpassed – although, it is likely at this point.
