John Wick: Chapter 4
As predicted, March continues the trend of franchise high openings (excluding Shazam! – we’ll get to that soon) with John Wick: Chapter 4. In fact, the John Wick franchise has always improved upon its predecessor by a significant margin:
- John Wick – $14.4M
- John Wick: Chapter 2 – $30.4M
- John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – $56.8M
AND NOW
- John Wick: Chapter 4 – $73.5M
This is a rare and impressive occurrence in the current film marketplace and it is even more impressive considering the franchise is an R-Rated action thriller series. One of the weak points for the John Wick franchise is the international box office which has always earned less internationally (excluding the first film, albeit it, internationally it only earned literally $6,000 more). It opened up less internationally to a total of $64 million which is still a franchise-high.
How this paces heading into the summer movie season? John Wick films are leggy movies with over 3.0x multipliers over their opening weekend. As John Wick: Chapter 4 has an even higher CinemaScore (‘A’) than the previous films and the highest Rotten Tomatoes score then expect a lengthy run for this film. I’d say that it will end up getting $220M – $240M.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
If last weekend wasn’t enough to be deeply concerned about the box office performance for this film then this weekend certainly puts the nail in the coffin. Shazam! franchise is definitely dead. DCEU is officially dead. The film had an incredibly high drop of 68% as it made $9.7M in its second weekend. Worst part about this? It had a really low opening to begin with so it isn’t safeguarded with a high opening weekend like recent MCU films and their sharp second weekend drops.
Internationally it doesn’t look any better as it has only made $56.1M in total. At this point, look for Shazam! Fury of the Gods to fall under $150M total WORLDWIDE. Yes, you read that right.
Other Interesting Box Office News:
- Scream VI surpasses Scream V in Domestic and Worldwide totals.
- Avatar: The Way of Water beats Avengers: Infinity War at the domestic box office and surpasses the $2.3B mark.
