The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Go back a few days ago and we were predicting that The Super Mario Bros. Movie would have the highest opening weekend at the box office for a video-game adaption. Well… fast forward to the end of the weekend and it is already the highest video-game adaption EVER (!!) in just three days. The Super Mario Bros. Movie breaks into the upper echelon of some of the greatest box office performances of all-time – well, at least for its opening weekend. I initially predicted that over the 3-day weekend it would gross $90 million and then once Thursday and Friday’s estimates, I changed it to $146M which is a touch under its actual gross ($146.3M). Total five-day opening being $204.6M.
It has the 17th highest five day total of all-time, 30th highest opening weekend (3-day) of all-time and is already an inch away from being the highest grossing film of 2023. If we shift over to the international side of the table – it looked just as impressive. Earning $172.8M up to Sunday for a $377.5M worldwide opening weekend – the highest of 2023 so far. It is the HIGHEST all-time opening weekend for an animated film at the global box office with Frozen II being 2nd ($358M), although the comparisons are hard since Mario had a couple extra days.
Just insane numbers. The sky is the limit to see where Mario goes and we’ll be following the entire way as it surpasses the billion dollar milestone.
Air

Amazon Studios will surely be happy with the result of Air which comes from smart counterprogramming, excellent word of mouth and great release marketing campaign. The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be the headliner this weekend but Airs’ five day opening $20.2M should not go unnoticed – particularly as the movie was never intended for a theatrical release. Amazon will be happy with an extra bit of revenue for a film that was never meant to earn at the box office – with $30.6M for a global debut. Heading into the NBA Play-off’s, should continue to capitalize on basketball excitement to have good legs movie forward.
Other Interesting Box Office News:
- John Wick: Chapter 4 manages to stabilize a bit and finding space to reach the $200M milestone.
- Steep -61% drop for Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – can it have milder drop heading into the third weekend?
