Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3

  • Weekend Gross: $62M
  • Domestic Total:214.7M
  • Worldwide Total: $530.9M

One of the main discussion points regarding box office performances for MCU films is the second weekend drop. They usually open strong and end up being massively frontloaded where they drop 60-70%; inevitably ending with a disappointing figure. However, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 has flipped this – a disappointing opening and an exceptional result in the second weekend with $62M (-47.6%).

It will be aiming to have a strong weekend moving forward but as the opening was significantly lower than Vol.2, it is very unlikely to meet that domestic total. It would need exceptional holds throughout the duration of its run to track towards that figure. What is true, is that the ‘A’ CinemaScore for the film will assist in softening the blow from the collateral damage of the MCU’s reputation.

I do have some reservations regarding the long-term potential of the film due to direct competition coming week after week for the next couple of months. Also, the sluggish effort in China is something to be wary about as the film has only $58.3M in the market, which is known for steep drops after week 3. With Fast X releasing in China tomorrow, I think it is very possible we won’t see $75M for Vol.3 in China.

Box Office results for Guardians of the Galaxy:

  • $333M Domestic Total
  • $439M International Total
  • $773M Worldwide Total

Box Office results for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2:

  • $389M Domestic Total
  • $473M International Total
  • $863M Worldwide Total

The most likely ending scenario is that Vol.3 is sandwiched between the two films. However, there is a possibility that it can fall below both films or exceed both films. Guess we’ll need to see how it handles the oncoming competition, not only domestically but also, abroad.
