Weekend Box Office Forecast: Do or Die for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The second weekend at the box office is always a big one, this is the weekend where we see how well a movie truly will perform and all eyes are on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 this week to see if the drop is major or if it is able to hold its own.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

It may have had an underwhelming opening weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has received positive feedback from viewers, which may prevent the film from experiencing a sharp decline in its box office earnings. Its audience score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes is one of the highest in the MCU franchise in recent years and the Covid period.

On the second weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 saw a decline of only 19 percent on Sunday which was released in 2017. Recent MCU sequels have experienced significant declines in their second frame, with some hovering between 62 and 70 percent, and most recently, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had a massive drop in its second weekend.

However, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could potentially buck this trend and surpass Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which had a drop of 63% in its second weekend. The film has already earned $344 million globally, including $138.4 million from North America and $205.6 million internationally.

Although Thursday previews have become more popular since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s release six years ago, resulting in a potentially sharper decline, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 may still achieve a drop of less than 60% due to positive word-of-mouth and casual fans tuning in to watch the film, and with no competition until Fast X in a couple of weeks time the box office is all Guardians to dominate.
