Movie Lists: Top 10 Movie Trilogies of All Time

There have been so many great film trilogies throughout cinema history, in this list I will cover what I believe to be the 10 best movie trilogies. Now the criteria I have is that the trilogy must have only three films in that franchise that have been released, so films such as Toy Story and Star Wars are ineligible as they have four or more, so with that out of the way here are my Top 10 movie trilogies of all time!

10. Captain America

The Captain America trilogy, a cornerstone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, showcases the evolution of Steve Rogers, a humble soldier turned super-soldier, portrayed by Chris Evans. Comprising “Captain America: The First Avenger“, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier“, and “Captain America: Civil War“, this trilogy explores themes of heroism, loyalty, and the consequences of power. In the first installment, we witness Steve’s transformation into Captain America and his battle against the villainous Red Skull during World War II. The second film delves into political intrigue and the reemergence of his old friend turned enemy, the Winter Soldier. Finally, in “Civil War,” the trilogy reaches a climax as Steve confronts the ethical dilemmas of superhero accountability in a divided world. With compelling character development, thrilling action sequences, and a thoughtful exploration of the consequences of heroism, the Captain America trilogy stands as a shining example of superhero storytelling within the MCU.

9. The Cornetto Trilogy

The Cornetto Trilogy, also known as the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy, is a remarkable cinematic collaboration between British director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. This trilogy consists of three highly acclaimed films: “Shaun of the Dead”, “Hot Fuzz”, and “The World’s End”. Each installment combines elements of comedy, action, and genre parody to create a unique blend of entertainment. What sets the Cornetto Trilogy apart is its clever use of recurring themes, humor, and a Cornetto ice cream cone that appears in each film. Together, these movies offer a hilarious and satirical exploration of various film genres, from zombie horror to buddy cop action, all while maintaining a heartfelt core of friendship and growth among the characters. The trilogy has earned a dedicated fanbase and remains a testament to the trio’s storytelling prowess and their love for cinema.

8. How to Train Your Dragon

The “How to Train Your Dragon” trilogy, a rare gem in the world of animated movies, is set in a Viking village and revolves around Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel), who forms an unlikely bond with a  beloved dragon – Toothless, and embarks on life-saving adventures alongside it. This beloved series expanded with two sequels: “How to Train Your Dragon 2” and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World”. The animation and score throughout the trilogy with each installment improving. The thematic richness of the film needs to be praised, with the first film exploring changing relationships, the second focusing on accepting one’s destiny, and the third delving into the idea of sacrificing personal needs for the greater good.

7. Back to the Future

The Back to the Future trilogy, which debuted with the first film in 1985, has solidified itself as one of the most adored and popular trilogies in cinematic history.
