Guardians Of the Galaxy Vol.3

I wanted to sit on this one a bit. There is a lot of nuance to the discourse surrounding the MCU box office and particularly, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. You can look at this with several points of view and each offering a different perspective. From a business standpoint, Marvel Studios/Disney aren’t up in arms over these box office results as $118.4M domestic opening and $289M worldwide opening, so they are okay.

However, it is important to look at the narrative and trends and how the results tell that story. The story being that the MCU is on the decline from both a commercial success and quality reception perspective and diving deeper, the first real signs of superhero fatigue is here. Now, I will not touch upon the superhero fatigue element because I think more data is needed to validate such a claim. The MCU component is absolutely true, we can no longer deny that.

Let’s briefly touch upon the 2022 and 2023 MCU theatrical projects:

  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
    • Had momentum following Spider-Man: No Way Home.
    • Divisive reception from critics and audiences.
    • Earned a respectable $955M but below projections.
  • Thor: Love and Thunder
    • Disliked by audiences and not favoured by critics.
    • Thor remains one of the last remaining staple characters of the MCU.
    • Disappointing $760M WW total.
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
    • Lukewarm response by audiences and critics.
    • Had the X-Factor of dealing with the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman.
    • Successful $453M DOM, but disappointing $405M INT – $859M WW.
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
    • Disliked by audiences and critics.
    • Excluding Covid-19 affected films, it has the 4th lowest WW gross.
    • The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first box office flop – $475M WW total.

Now here we are with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 except the audience ratings and word of mouth appears to be much higher and the ‘A’ CinemaScore will assist in a lengthy run. The opening here is disappointing and it is concerning but based on other factors, it appears that the film is taking collateral damage from the previous woes of the MCU. Perhaps, with a leggy box office run, it can turn the tide and change the narrative for the MCU.

Box Office results for Guardians of the Galaxy:

  • $333M Domestic Total
  • $439M International Total
  • $773M Worldwide Total

Box Office results for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2:

  • $389M Domestic Total
  • $473M International Total
  • $863M Worldwide Total

It is very likely that it won’t be able to touch the domestic and international total as Vol.2 so if it can sandwich itself between the two prior Guardians of the Galaxy films then that is an acceptable figure – considering the other variables. If it falls below the first Guardian of the Galaxy’s domestic or worldwide total then that is very concerning for Marvel.

Even if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 may lead to very box office results, this may be a building block towards a better reputation on the quality side of things which can lead to future box office success. Time will tell.
